Why renters choose Lisbon
Portugal’s most international city: a thriving tech scene, world-class food, 300+ days of sun, excellent transport and direct flights across Europe and North America. Renters settle into distinct neighbourhoods — cosmopolitan Chiado and Príncipe Real, village-like Campo de Ourique and Estrela, historic Alfama and Mouraria, modern riverside Parque das Nações, and up-and-coming Marvila and Arroios — so the right area depends on your pace of life, commute and budget.
What the rental search is like
Lisbon’s long-term market moves fast: the best homes are often gone within days. Landlords frequently ask for a Portuguese guarantor (fiador) or several months’ rent upfront, proof of income, and most listings are in Portuguese, with plenty of outdated or misleading ads on the portals. We chase and verify listings, view on your behalf by video, negotiate the terms, and navigate the guarantor and deposit requirements so you don’t lose a home to paperwork.
Where to look
Central and walkable (Chiado, Príncipe Real, Bairro Alto); local and family-friendly (Campo de Ourique, Estrela, Alvalade, Avenidas Novas); modern and green (Parque das Nações); and better value, up-and-coming areas (Arroios, Marvila, Penha de França). We match the neighbourhood to how you actually want to live.
International schools
The Lisbon–Cascais corridor concentrates the main options: St. Julian’s (British), Carlucci American International (CAISL), Deutsche Schule Lissabon, Lycée Français Charles Lepierre and TASIS Portugal. We factor school proximity into the search for relocating families from day one.
Rough rents
Around €16/m² — roughly €1,400–1,500/month for a typical 90 m² two-bed. That’s the median for new contracts; central and furnished homes run higher.
Rents: median for new lease contracts, INE, Q1 2025 (provisional).
