The Enchanting Douro Valley

If you are a wine lover, a nature lover, or would like to visit somewhere outside of the busy cities of Lisbon and Porto, we would recommend checking out the UNESCO designated area of Douro Valley.

The origins of Port wine can be credited to this region of terraced landscape, that hugs the Douro River. Over the last two millennia, the hardworking grape growers skillfully left an indelible mark by fashioning these noticeable viticulture ridges in Alto Douro. This region of wine producing vineyards or Quintas are among the oldest in the world and was officially recognized by UNESCO in 2001 to be a World Heritage.

When visiting the area, take your time and pick out a few vineyards to visit, sample the gastronomy that compliments the wine, take a river cruise in Peso da Régua and hike around the vineyards of Pinhão.

In terms of when to visit Douro Valley, that’s the best part, this area has much more to offer outside of the summer months, as the harvesting season is in the fall, and the gorgeous scenic sights are best enjoyed in the springtime. Of course, summer vacations in Douro Valley can still give you all the sun and sand as desired, with some relaxing river beach destinations. Take a drive, just over an hour east of Porto and discover Douro Valley for yourself.
